Paramount Pictures and J.J. Abrams’ studio Bad Robot have officially acquired the rights to adopt the blockbuster Japanese anime film Your Name as reported by Variety.
These two companies will be working with the Japan based company Toho Co., Ltd., who are the original producers of the film, to create this highly anticipated live action remake. Toho will handle the distribution of the movie in Japan.
Lindsey Weber and Abrams will produce for Bad Robot, alongside Genki Kawamura, the producer of the original film. Eric Heisserer, Academy Award nominee for Arrival, will be developing the screenplay for Your Name.
The Japanese animated drama film originally was written and directed by Makoto Shinkai and produced by CoMix Wave Films. Based on Shinkai’s novel of the same name, Your Name tells the story of a young high school girl in rural Japan and a high school boy in Tokyo who swap bodies. The film stars the voices of Ryunosuke Kamiki, Mone Kamishiraishi, Masami Nagasawa, and Etsuko Ichihara.
The animated film made its debut in July 2016 at the Anime Expo and again in August of the same year in Japan. The film grossed more than $355 million.
